We are living in an era of cutting edge innovation, where all aspects of our daily lives are somehow related to the science of expertise. Technology has undoubtedly been responsible for creating incredibly useful resources that put all the information we could ever need right at our fingertips. However, this achievement would not be conceivable without the STEM subjects. 

 

On its surface, STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. However, when you pull that first layer away, you uncover the most complex puzzle in the educational world.

 

What is STEM?

Most people know what STEM stands for, but how many of us can really tell you what it means? Science enables us to understand the living, material, and physical world, helping to develop collaborative research, critical enquiry, and investigative skills. Technology covers a range of fields that rely on the use of knowledge and skills to stretch out human capabilities and to help satisfy human needs and wants, working at the ever changing interface of science and society. Engineering draws on scientific methods and knowledge to address, and solve, real-world problems by means of differencing technologies. Mathematics supports all of STEM and equips us with the skills needed to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk, and make educated decisions.

 

Why study STEM subjects?

There are plenty of benefits to choosing to study a STEM subject, one of which being the current STEM skills shortage in the UK. There is a huge demand for STEM graduates at present, subsequently leading to higher chances of gaining employment after you graduate.

 

 

Besides, STEM degrees, in general, can give you a handful of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, creative problem solving, and team working. As these programmes are very intense, you will also demonstrate project and time management skills. The transferable skills you will acquire are exceptionally valuable to most employers and will open the door to countless graduate level jobs, inside or outside of the STEM fields.

 

Another appealing reason is the fact that you will have the potential to make a real change in the world and save lives. For instance, using engineering to find new ways to access clean water, technology to diagnose diseases earlier, and science to cure diseases. We could go on!

 

If you are still not convinced about pursuing a career in STEM, let’s talk about money! The salaries from these subjects are some of the highest available. According to Forbes, some of the top 10 best paying STEM job titles for recent graduates are Petroleum Engineer, Computer and Information Research Scientist, Nuclear Medicine Technologist, and Software Developer.

Can you think of any particular names in the STEM fields? Elon Musk, co-founder of PayPal and founder of SpaceX and Tesla, is a perfect example of what taking advantage of resources outside of school can do. His first taste of entrepreneurship came from coding and selling a computer game called Blaster. His drive for knowledge in diverse forms led him to his revolutionary companies. Another example is Dr. Ellen Stofan, renowned astrobiologist and ex Chief Scientist at NASA. According to her, we may be settling other planets in as little as 10 years! These two cases are a brief sample of the endless list of influential people related to STEM.

 

Educating intellects through STEM subjects and raising awareness towards the inherent applications that STEM careers have, are the keys to pushing forward today’s technology-driven world. So many mind-blowing discoveries have arisen from the development of technology, dramatically changing our daily lives. The question that remains is, are you up for the challenge?
